The grumbles, aches, pains and feelings of sleepiness as the days get shorter and mornings get darker as Winter soon approaches. Another round of Holiday snacking, family events and shovelling, shovelling, shovelling....What tends to happen during this time, as many of us can relate to, is a lack of fitness motivation. I admit, I do not like driving in snowy, icy conditions, BUT there are many things I DO love about winter. It's all about reframing, because let's face it, if you're Canadian, winter is here to stay for the next 3-4.5 months....so deal.
Cross-country skiing will give you the much-needed cardio exercise we miss out on in the winter. A brisk ski will get your blood pumping and increase your heart health and endurance. It's a challenging workout that engages muscles all over your body. Not to mention, it's cheaper than downhill skiing, the boots are more comfortable, you stay warmer from the cardio, get to enjoy nature along the way and you still get to enjoy some hills as an occasional reward!
Skating is also a fun and active way to pass the chilly months, choices of inside or outside skating and much of it is FREE!
One of my fave things to offer is SNOGA...outdoor Yoga in the snow! Snow pants, mittens, pups and kiddos are all a fun part of this laid back, simplified way to stretch out in the crisp, winter air for fun and to get the nose running to clear things out! I personally offer it as a 'pop-up' class depending on the temperature or pending storms and it's FREE or by donation to conservation programs. :)
Snow showing is also a GREAT way to stay in shape and basically have the ability to hike in the snow without the frustration of sinking every 2 seconds, (LOL!). There are so many pre-made trails to discover or you can make your own.
Bottom line, if you stop and think about it, there are so many ways to enjoy MOVEMENT in the Winter months and get those rosy cheeks blooming. Fresh air and vitamin D are even more crucial during this time, if you don't have a dog getting you out there, you need to pull up those snow pants and GET MOVING! ;)
